Niqabi Tales 1.The Rag

Recently, I have been following Mufti Menk's talks," stories of the "prophet's"(alayhimus salaam)and I have been thoroughly enjoying them. At the moment I've listened to all the talks available online and I am patiently waiting for the next one to be put up.

Anyway, I won't tell you all that he says in his talks, you can just listen and see for yourself. (listen and see?! lame I know)
He briefly mentioned, the other day, how one should feel happy, when one is laughed at, for their Islamic dress. Happy that they must be doing something right, to receive such a reaction out of others. The whole thing was quite motivating.
Now, this got me thinking- that yes- next time someone is swearing or shouting abuse I'll try to remember these words and ignore them...

Usually, I do tend to ignore people, most of the time you know it's pointless arguing with idiots. They will never see or understand sense.
This, however, is about some of the times when they haven't been ignored and yes it is those times when we've had a SCENE.I've called them Niqaabi Tales.
I'm not putting this up so the sad losers who go around abusing people feel they have affected my life- no they have certainly not- but in reality, I was thinking of this the other day and literally "lolling" to myself...and here I am sharing the lols with you.

THE RAG
Once upon a time in a land far away,(called Stretford) were two ladies-well one was a lady the other was still a Jamea girl...( a different species altogether) The mother and daughter were heading to the local shopping centre....

Ok- so my mum and I were in what used to be called "Stretford Arndale Centre"..and were heading into WHSmiths( for "kaapees" or stationary of some sort), in them days i hadn't started wearing Niqaab yet but my mum was wearing one. As we were walking in, a group of 45-70 year olds were standing, pointing and tutting at us; the usual stuff, there was a lot of head shaking going on. At first, all was ignored, until one of the ladies said, very loudly"I've a good mind of cutting that rag off her face"(not once but a few times)
I didn't even have to look at my mum to confirm that(oh no)..yes she has flipped, they had caught her on a bad day.
"Faatima -go get the scissors! (loud enough for them to hear, of course)
(Me)"Erm..what?!heehee Yes.. I had started giggling..not the best time to get the giggles at my raging mother......
"I said go get the scissors!"
"Ok..Mum Calm Down"
My mum was using her deadly serious voice and I scurried off in search of "the scissors", least I too became a victim of it.
All the while I can hear my mums voice shouting,-"I want you to come NOW and cut this rag of my face! Come on!"
After I do a pointless half-hearted hunt for "the scissors" I went back to join the action. (Yes, I admit I was younger - a lot cockier then than I was now) I won't mention at this point the other things that were said- just so you know- swear words may or may not have been involved.
The lady, who so desperately wanted to cut the rag, at this point was looking mortified. My mum was still going strong(with a lot of hand actions and gesturing for them to take the still unpaid for scissors)"Come with me- I thought you wanted to cut my rag off? DO YOU WANT TO CUT IT OFF OR NOT????!!!
Honestly, at this point I was in stitches,I was laughing so much that I don't recall, the rest of the conversation... tear were flowing from my eyes and I  was making sounds that could only be heard by cats.... what I do remember is that they looked that they weren't going to be saying anything to any Niaqaabi ever again.

This is not something that should be done-I am in no way encouraging or endorsing this behaviour lol. When we were returning home- I recall my mum and I laughing like crazy people; It's the whole extreme emotions thing I guess..We were thinking "why?! Why did that happen? Why didn't we just ignore it"
Sometime shaytaan gets the better of us- I don't know- some people say you should stick up for yourself -others say you shouldn't- but as Niqaabis- I am sure you all have some stories to share!
So fellow "post boxes"(yes-the first time i was called this I found it hilarious!) share your stories..and keep a lookout for more Niqaabi Tales.

  2. Had a few spits in our direction but me like a dodo is unobservant that I didn't even realise until somebody pointed it out to me too late...do you remember the Jaamia tale of the girl (Sabiha Rahman was it?) who got called Ninja by a black guy, and retorted, 'At least I can take mine off!' and quickly legged it before things got too heated up. Dunno how accurate that story is though. Once I did get into a little argument on an escalator with a stupid guy who was deffo not being a good role model for his two little daughters who were with him. He was commenting about me and I butted in saying 'I don't affect your life!' He grumbled to the bottom and when he got off he said, 'I'll rip your scarf off', but thankfully, it was a public area and I had my sisters with me so I bravely replied, 'Go on then!' and by then we went our separate ways. If I was alone and this happened in a quiet street then I'd deffo be shaken up.
