The Missing Churidaar

An average day on Wilmslow Road is always a little different to the average day on the high street. The air is filled with different aromas, of curry, kebabs and sweetmeats. The sound of foreign languages fills the air, deep gruff voices accompanied by the sound of the accordion being played by the old Bosnian lady in her usual spot.. Every few yards a man will have a little stand, selling phone cards for international calls, encouraging passers-by to ring loved ones in India and Pakistan for a few pence a minute. It is nearly always busy; if not with those who are looking for great food, then with those on the hunt for clothes, material, shoes and jewellery.

It so happens that I have my tailor in the area, (I usually go for Jubba/ abaya alterations.) Needless to say, he is always happy to see my husband and I, (feel free to do a queens speech voice) and has the utmost respect for those in Islamic dress. So much so, that the first few times I gave him Abaya's he made a point of mentioning that because it is Islamic dress he would give a discount.

"Where is this heading?"- I hear you ask-all shall be revealed in good time.

Yesterday, when the usual trip to the tailor was made- he wasn't sitting at his trusted machine, instead, he was trawling through CCTV footage. Apparently, an expensive Indian outfit had been stolen from the store below. All very intriguing. So who will turn out to be the mysterious thief we wondered. (A lot of eyebrow-raising took place.) Lo and behold we watched too with baited breath for it only to turn out to be a lady in Niqaab! One side of here jilbaab was bulging from where she had stuffed her stolen goods! Well, that was pretty embarrassing let me tell you even though I have no idea who she was, I felt ashamed for her, she let the sisterhood down...
The Tailor was so upset as to why someone would want to carry out an act of sin with a veil of purity as a cover. Why hide behind a good thing to perform bad and stain everyone else too.
The majority of us, I wish to think, are not all thieving scum. Regardless of outer clothing, we need to remember that we are first and foremost Muslims. We should lead society by example.

In my personal opinion,n I believe if you're going to do something, do it properly or don't bother. Intentions should be checked on a regular basis. What am I doing? Why am I doing this? Is my intention a good one or not? ( I don't want to go off on a tangent..intentions is a whole other topic)

Many a time we may look at a persons outer appearance and make a snap judgement; next time you feel yourself judging someone- just stop and remember, only Allah knows what is in peoples hearts ,and he is the only judge that counts!

Take care all
faatima

* For legal reasons I must state it is not certain if outfit was of churidaar origin ;)
